There has been no more improbable success story in golf than
that of Vijay Singh, whose career began in his native Fiji
Islands and has now spanned the globe, culminating in winning
three major championships. Singh won the 2000 Masters Tournament
to go along with his victory in the 1998 US PGA Championship.
Vijay, whose name means “victory” in Hindi and who traces
his ancestors to India, has won on four continents -- Asia,
Africa, Europe and North America. He arrived on the PGA Tour
in the United States in 1993 and won in his first season on
the way to gaining Rookie of the Year. Vijay won the PGA Money
List in 2003, taking away the title that Tiger Woods had won
on the previous four occasions. In 2003, he won four times
and had 18 Top 10 finishes. 2004 was even better for Singh,
winning 9 times around the world including his third major
when he again won the US PGA Championship. But most importantly
he became number one on the World Golf Rankings putting an
end to Tiger Woods’ supremacy. He now has 30 US PGA Tour victories
to go along with 22 international triumphs. Known for his
work ethic and long hours on the practice range, Singh is
a model of consistency and perseverance. Accorded Honorary
Life Membership of The European Tour in May 2001 and his record-breaking
achievements in 2004 resulted in him being named as The European
Tour Golfer of the Year for the first time. Was inducted into
the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. Established the Vijay
Singh Charitable Foundation, benefiting charities and non-profit
agencies that provide assistance, shelter, counselling and
support to women and children who are victims of domestic
abuse. In 2006 and 2007 Vijay continued to produce quality
golf with a victory at the 2006 Barclays Classic and a further
three wins in 2007 with the best coming at the Mercedes-Benz
Championship. Vijay has now racked up an impressive 52 tournament
wins and this shows that he is truly a world class player. |
